North Korea's Air Power: A Look at the Korean People's Army Air Force
Historical Overview
The Korean People's Army Air Force (KPAAF) is the aerial warfare branch of North Korea's military. It traces its origins back to the early days of the Korean War, when Soviet pilots flew combat missions in support of the North Korean forces.
Modern Era
Today, the KPAAF operates a fleet of approximately 280 combat aircraft, including:
- Mig-21
- Mig-23
- Mig-29
- Su-25
- Ilyushin Il-76
Training and Capabilities
The KPAAF receives training and support from both China and Russia. It is considered to be a well-trained and capable force, but it is also limited by its aging equipment and lack of modern technology.
Future Developments
North Korea is actively developing its air power capabilities. In recent years, it has acquired new aircraft and upgraded its existing fleet. It is also believed to be developing new ballistic missiles that could be used to target enemy aircraft.
