Wildfire Devastates Apartment Complex in Cedar Park, Texas
A wildfire that tore through Cedar Park on Tuesday evening has destroyed at least one apartment building, damaged several others, and prompted evacuation orders for surrounding areas.
The fire started at around 5:30 p.m. in a field near Lakeline Boulevard and Park Street, Cedar Park Fire Department spokesperson Brenda Duvall said at a news conference Tuesday evening.
The fire quickly spread, fanned by high winds, and soon engulfed the nearby apartment complex, Duvall said.
"We had a lot of reports of people being trapped, people being on balconies," Duvall said. "We were able to get everybody out safely."
As of Tuesday night, the fire was 60% contained, Duvall said. Firefighters were still working to extinguish hotspots and mop up.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter for evacuees at the Cedar Park Recreation Center at 1435 Main Street.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
