Abnormal Security, a cybersecurity firm specializing in AI-native human behavior security, has released its H2 2024 Email Threat Report, revealing a significant increase in file-sharing phishing attacks.

According to the report, file-sharing phishing volume has more than tripled since June 2023. These attacks involve cybercriminals exploiting trusted file-sharing platforms to impersonate well-known brands and manipulate targets.

By using e-signature and file-hosting services as a cover, these attacks are designed to deceive targets into disclosing sensitive information or clicking on malicious links.

Traditional BEC Attacks Continue to Scale

While file-sharing phishing attacks are on the rise, traditional business email compromise (BEC) attacks also continue to scale, increasing by 50% during the same period.

BEC attacks involve cybercriminals impersonating legitimate businesses or individuals to gain access to financial accounts or sensitive information.

These attacks often use social engineering techniques to manipulate targets into providing the necessary information.

Experts Sound the Alarm

"These findings highlight the evolving nature of phishing attacks," said Abnormal Security CEO Evan Reiser. "Cybercriminals are constantly adapting their tactics to exploit new vulnerabilities, making it critical for organizations to stay vigilant and invest in robust security measures."

"File-sharing phishing attacks are particularly concerning because they exploit trust in well-known platforms," added Reiser. "Organizations must educate their employees about these threats and implement strict security protocols to protect against them."
